NECC 2007 - Lunch with Ron Clark

Wow! What a wonderful, energetic, and contagious young man. The movie did not do him justice.

Thanks to Promethean, I had the opportunity to eat lunch with and hear Ron Clark talk, dance, and energize a small crowd as he told his story of becoming an educator. Like many of us in education, his career started quite by accident, but once there, he knew in his heart the classroom was where he belonged.

Ron is the real deal. His classes are structured yet engaging. He teaches the whole family not just his students which he believes is a major reason for his success in the Harlem school–that and his essentials for students and parents. Ron has moved on from Harlem because in his own words, “my programs are in place and have been successfully implemented; I have met my challenges here.” Ron partnered with Atlanta middle school principal of the year Kim Bearden to open the internationally acclaimed Ron Clark Academy http://www.ronclarkacademy.com/ron_clark_academy/.

I went to the luncheon a bit skeptical but I am now a believer. Audience members received his book The Essential 55 which I stood in line to have him autograph.

Oh did I mention that all of Ron’s Academy classrooms are ACTIVclassrooms? In the founding days of the Academy, he was contacted by Promethean, whose corporate offices are in Atlanta, and was asked how Promethean could help with his efforts. Promethean wanted to give back to the community they live and work in. The rest is history. Ron actually did his presentation using the ACTIVboard. He even used formative assessment. He is my hero!

I was there at NECC…. how did I miss Ron Clark. In the last few days, I somehow finally found out about the DVD, and watched it! So inspiring, especially the interviews. I have had the book for a few years…but hadn’t thought about it.
