Our Mr. Sun

This flip chart looks at the sun, different parts of the solar system, gravity, inertia, how this all operates together to give the earth light and heat, and finally a bit about fusion being the energy substance on the sun. It utilizes movie clips, listening sets, interactive pages, and web pages to give the students a broader understanding of the sun and our solar system.

It is planned as one lesson but can be broken up into two.

Solar Eclipses, Lunar Eclipses, Spring Tides and Neap Tides

Physics 1 Academic: Grades 11 and 12

  • Students identify and analyze the effect of mass and distance on gravitational forces.
  • Students analyze the effect of gravitational forces on the earth's tides and how the alignment of earth, sun and moon affect the height of the water tides.
  • Students observe the other effects of the alignment of the earth, moon and earth such as eclipses.

Free Fall, Gravity, Aristotle and Galileo

Physics 1 Academic: Grades 11 and 12

  • Students analyze the effects of the force of gravity on the motion of an object in free-fall.
  • Students interpret graphs of accelerated motion.
  • Students calculate the final velocity and distance that an object falls for a defined time under the influence only of gravity.
  • Students apply the concept of air resistance (friction) to understand terminal velocity and apply it to the motion of an object.
