{Session 7 Overview}
The name podcast or podcasting came out of the popularity of the iPod. However, you don’t have to own an iPod or any MP3 player to participate. A podcast is essentially like a radio broadcast on demand. However, these days, there are also video podcasts (some refer to them as vidcasts and vodcasts). You can find podcasts in any subject area under the sun - education, various hobbies, entertainment, news, you name it.
When someone publishes their podcast files to the Internet, they allow users to subscribe to a feed and receive their podcasts automatically at no cost. You need a free piece of software like iTunes to subscribe to a podcast. However, you don’t even need that if all you want to do is go out and listen to one. Most sites have the podcasts available so that you can listen to it directly from there without ever downloading it onto your computer or MP3 player.
Sound too complicated? Its not. In the tutorials below, you will be shown how to use the free piece of software called iTunes to find, subscribe to, and listen to a podcast. iTunes is part of the SBISD software set automatically loaded onto all XP machines. You can also download it from Apple.com on your home computer for both Mac’s and PC’s.
In this session, you will actually be podCATCHING - meaning you will be finding podcasts that others have made. If you want to learn how to CREATE and publish your own podcasts, Session 8: Podcasting will show you how.
